Palpung Tasmania

from little things, big things grow

With the blessings of H.H. 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, Venerable Choje Lama Shedrup and Lama Samten travelled to Australia and New Zealand, in the early 1980’s. Through their teaching, students requested the establishment of dharma centres throughout the region, according to the lineage.

This Tibetan Institute was founded by Ven. Choje Lama Shedrup, in the Karma Kagyu lineage, in February 2000. The purchase of the Methodist / Uniting Church complex, in March 2002, put down firm foundations in Launceston. Some twenty years later, we can now declare the Institute fully owned and secure.

Palpung Thigsum Chokyi Ghatsal is under the spiritual guidance and administration of the Palpung Sherabling Monastic Seat of Guru Vajradhara Chamgon Kenting Tai Situpa, and our Tasmanian Trustees.

Abbott and Founder

Venerable Choje Lama Shedrup

Venerable Choje Lama Shedrup is the Abbot and founder of Palpung Thigsum Chokyi Ghatsal Tibetan Buddhist Institute. He established the Institute in February 2000 and in 2004 under his guidance the Institute formally become an Official Independent Branch of Palpung Sherabling, the monastic eat of H.H. Chamgon Kenting 12th Tai Situpa, the Institute’s Spiritual Director.

We are truly blessed to have the inspiration, wisdom and guidance of Choje Lama in helping to bring to fruition the vision of “Palpung”: The Glorious union of study and practice. “Pal” means glorious and “Pung” means to gather. Palpung is renowned for its rich tradition in practice, study and ritual as well as living art and culture.

The aim of Palpung Launceston is to preserve these precious living traditions and to make them available to students and to encourage an exchange of ideas, friendship and the Buddhist principles of loving kindness and compassion between followers and the wider community.

Day Of Dharma

You are welcome to visit our gompa. Come and light a lamp, join our regular timetable program or stay longer and meet us at our monthly Day of Dharma, on the first Sunday of every month.

All students are invited to our Day of Dharma. This is an important gathering time, where we all come together to share and support each other. We begin each Day of Dharma by joining in prayers, meditations and talks with our precious Lama in our Gompa. We then enjoy a shared vegetarian lunch and a catch-up with dharma friends.

Our regular meditation classes rotate between a formal teaching class led by Lama on every Saturday and an informal discussion class every Tuesday evening either led by Lama or guided by our life long dharma friend, Mark.

“I believe that to have world peace, we must first have inner peace. Those who are naturally serene, at peace with themselves, will be open towards others. I think this is where the very foundation of universal peace lies.”
— HH 14th Dalai Lama
